Holistic Health

Medical science has advanced tremendously during the last century. Now it is possible to prevent, treat and cure diseases that caused mortality in the past. However, regardless of the advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies, during the last two decades, we have seen a raise of epidemics such as SARS, MRSA and Covid-19. Although billions of dollars are spent on research, still scientists are unable to find answers for the cure of conditions such as chronic pain and an array of psychosomatic and neurological diseases, ranging from overactive bladder and pudental neuralgia to migraines, depression, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, etc.

Prescription drugs are the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer in the United States and Europe (PMID:25355584). Also, the rates of infertility and miscarriage have been increasing in Western countries. As per Public Health statistics from 2019: “Roughly 16% (or 1 in 6) couples in Canada experience infertility. This number has doubled since the 1980s.”

As a result of the above, over the last years, an increasing number of people started looking back to the grass roots of the medicine and its therapeutic modalities. Terms such as complimentary, alternative, personalized, functional or biopsychosocial have been used to describe it. In fact, this is not a complimentary or alternative medicine, but it is the original, holistic medicine of our forefathers. The medical systems of ancient Egypt, Persia, India, China, Greece and many more traditional folk medicines around the world are HOLISTIC. Rather than focusing on the biomedical aspect, they emphasize on the emotional, spiritual and physical well-being. Therefore, achieving optimum health is not treating a disease but preventing a disease

Holistic Health implies a complete approach to health where people accept responsibility for their own level of well-being and take charge of their own health. Patients are encouraged to recognize their own self-healing abilities and to develop more active approaches to prevention and treatment. The understanding that patients could be physically fit, but emotional problems or social isolation could make them very sick, determines the need to view disease as a disturbance to the whole organism.
